Deschooling

Deschooling is a concept that has been introduced to me lately. I think it is a good idea to read up on deschooling if you are planning on using unschooling as your curriculum.

Since I am sort of using unschooling as our curriculum for kindergarten for now I think it is important for me to discuss what deschooling is and why it is something parents need to read about if they are going the non-traditional route in homeschooling.

Deschooling is important if you child was previously in a school setting or if you as a parent were brought up in a traditional school setting. Deschooling is best described here and here.

When you educate yourself about deschooling, it will be easier for you to start your unschooling curriculum or your non-traditional homeschooling curriculum.

Our Homeschool Journey

Our pre-school aged child recently turned into a 5 year old so now he is a school aged child. The closer he got to becoming a school aged child, the more my husband and I thought about homeschooling. At this point, we have decided to homeschool. Our son is old enough to start regular school this coming Fall as a Kindergarten student. At that time, we will begin officially homeschooling our child.

Right now we are pre-homeschooling daily. We don't push anything on our child and we emphasize play more than anything. However, we do spend about an hour per day working in various pre-k and K-1 workbooks. After that we usually read a few books and we read again before bedtime.

This blog will be about our journey with Kindergarten homeschool. I will post about what we are doing each week, our experiences, resources, and anything else related or helpful to parents that are interested in homeschooling their kindergarten age child.
